Are you considering remodeling or renovating your home?

The reasons people decide to remodel or renovate are varied.  Some have no desire to move because they love their home, their neighborhood, or their commute to work is just perfect.  Maybe your family has grown since you purchased your home and you need more space; or maybe you just need to rework the space you have……maybe you are thinking about selling your home and know it needs to be updated before you place it on the market……maybe you have decided to care for a loved one who has special needs that your home is not suited for in its present condition, or maybe you just want your home to become more energy efficient.

Whatever your reason, the first step is to decide what you want to do with your home remodeling project.  Write a prioritized list of your needs and wants. Look in magazines and websites to collect pictures of projects and details you like.  Now who do you turn to?  There really is only one direction: you need to hire a professional home remodeler.  Your local Builder Association can help you with this.  Most cities have local chapters, with online contractor listings. Here in Pittsburgh, there is BAMP – the Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh – and you will find these home remodeling professionals listed on their website.  These are experienced professional who are experts in the industry and have experience with many types of projects.  You also want to consider looking for a contractor who is registered with the state Attorney Generals Office and ask them for their HIC# (Home Improvement Contractor #) This assures that the company is registered with the state to perform home improvements. A licensed general contractor can offer you a full scope of services for your project, and some can even include design services giving you a single source for your project, from design thru construction. Additionally, there are also very specific professional designations that some contractors can obtain through the NAHB – National Association of Home Builders – to continue to become proficient in an area or areas of expertise.

  •  CAPS – Certified Aging in Place Specialist – these individuals have received training to assess and modify your home to allow an aging population, including many baby boomers, to stay in their homes longer as they grow older
  •   CGP -Certified Green Professional – these individuals have a great knowledge of green & sustainable construction methods
  •   CGR – Certified Graduate Remodeler – these individuals earn an exclusive professional designation designed to emphasize business management as the key to a professional remodeling operation.
